Picture-Perfect Places to Propose in Scotland
IL recommends unique places to pop the question, as this is one of the most significant and memorable moments in our lives, so it’s important to get the location right. Luckily, Scotland has no shortage of beautiful settings for a romantic proposal. From scenic lochs, to fairy-tale castles, to log cabin hideaways, here’s our best pick of the most stylish, elegant places to have that special moment, and hopefully get the answer you’re looking for…
1. At a Loch-side Fairytale Castle
Lochs and rivers have long been associated with love, and the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond are said to be the most romantic in Scotland. Cameron House, with its fairy-tale castle appearance and sumptuously decorated interior is an excellent choice for a proposal weekend. Take a stroll in the fabulous grounds, dine in the Michelin-star restaurant or relax in their award-winning spa. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could rent out a boat and propose whilst floating on the loch.
2. At a Romantic Woodland Getaway
Nestled deep in the Cairngorms National Park, The Lazy Duck’s Woodman’s Hut is an eco-lodge just for couples which will present you with plenty of romantic opportunities to pop the question. Inside, you’ll find a wood burning stove, candle-lit lanterns and a skylight for stargazing. Nearby you can take a walk through the forest, gaze into each others’ eyes at the poet’s viewpoint, or take a dip together in the wood-fired hot-tub.
3. At an Idyllic Hillside Cottage
We can think of nothing more picturesque than proposing against the backdrop of a dramatic West Highland sunset. Set on a hillside on Scotland’s West Coast above Ullapool, the beautifully designed, eco-friendly Stonehouses command a panoramic view across Loch Broom and the Summer Isles. Under-floor heating, a sleek pale-wood sauna, a wood burning stove and a luxury free-standing bath make for the perfect couple’s retreat. Gavin and Rachel Anderson, who run the properties, say the houses have seen several successful proposals – both planned and impromptu.
4. Beneath a Star-lit Sky
Possibly a better option for the summer months, why not take some cushions and a blanket outside for a romantic picnic beneath a starlit sky? Scotland has a number of Dark Sky locations, which are the best spots for spectacular stargazing; pictured here is the beautiful Loch Cluanie in the Highlands. Alternatively, Galloway Forest Park in southwest Scotland is the country’s first Dark Sky Park, where it’s possible to see over 7,000 stars and planets with the naked eye.
5. At a Rooftop Restaurant
If you want to keep things classic and propose over a nice meal, Edinburgh ’s the Tower Restaurant is hard to beat for aesthetic appeal. Sitting at the top of the National Museum, the restaurant looks out over the Old Town’s stunning skyline with views of the castle and the Scot’s Monument. The imaginative, seasonal menu doesn’t disappoint either – choose from delights such as Isle of Mull lobster, seabass with samphire and charred cucumber, or beetroot risotto. Afterwards, you can celebrate the good news with some bubbly from their impressive list of Champagnes.
